Some of the fantastic folks at the Iron Rail Library and Bookshop have organized a night-time system of volunteer dispatchers, and bike and car escorts to ensure that anyone new to the city, biking alone, has a flat tire, gets lost, or just generally feels unsafe can be escorted home safely. Dispatchers will take calls and contact escort pairs around the city. The escorts will then go out to meet the caller to accompany them via bike (or car when necessary) on their way home.
On the night of Saturday October 4th many members of our community came together for a benefit in remembrance of Kirsten Brydum. Kirsten was slain in New Orleans while perusing progressive social transformation by creating a network for established and bourgeoning activist groups around the country. Not a victim, but a casualty, a fallen comrade. If you're receiving this email then you expressed interest in contributing time and resources to help keep ourselves and each other safe. This project will provide residents and visitors to New Orleans with a much needed service. We need help!
We need dispatchers, and we need as many cyclists from across the city as possible to volunteer for a shift. We will be sending out escorts in pairs, and we will aim to have multiple pairs of volunteers on call every night for each general geographic area. We particularly need help from our friends in Mid-City and Uptown
Please write us back, ask questions, share ideas, but most of all give us your phone number. We will be calling everyone personally to discuss the level to which they want to be involved, answer questions, and solidify a monthly schedule.
